Signing Day UPDATE: At least 19 local soccer players sign

Posted at 12:06 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Glacier Peak's John Froland signs with Colorado State University

Surrounded by his school's entire student body as well as dozens of teachers and administrators, Glacier Peak High School senior John Froland signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent with the Colorado State University football program this morning.

I interviewed Froland — who was joined by his mom, dad and grandpa — after an energetic pep assembly in the Glacier Peak gym. Froland, a lineman, said he was proud to be a pioneer for Grizzlies athletics; he is the first Glacier Peak student-athlete to formally accept a college football scholarship.

Glacier Peak of Snohomish opened in fall 2008 and has its first group of seniors this school year.

I will write a signing-day story for Thursday's Herald, leading with Froland's breakthrough.

    UPDATE
Here is a link to Colorado State's football Web site, which lists the Rams' recruiting class and has individual bios of the players, including Froland.

Check back here throughout the day for more local signing updates.

Meadowdale's Connor Hamlett signs with Oregon State University football program

Tons of signings happened around the area today. I got confirmation that Meadowdale senior Connor Hamlett signed with the Oregon State University football program this morning.

As of 3:25 p.m. today, Hamlett is one of 16 OSU gridiron recruits listed on the team's 2010 Beaver Signing Day Central Web page.

Oregon State lists Hamlett, a standout in football and basketball, as a tight end in Hamlett's player bio. The 6-foot-7, 230-pounder also played defense for Meadowdale but it looks like the Beavers plan to use him on offense.

Seven Jackson High School athletes celebrate college plans

Jackson football players Riley Carr (Air Force Academy), Andy Gay (Dartmouth College) and Trevor Hegeberg (South Dakota School of Mines & Technology) were honored this afternoon at a ceremony recognizing their college football opportunities. Hegeberg signed a Letter of Intent. But Carr and Gay signed what are essentially letters of commitment, Jackson football coach Joel Vincent said, because Air Force (a service academy) and Dartmouth (no athletic scholarships) use a different system for signing recruits.

Also, three girls soccer players (who were honored at the same ceremony) and one boys soccer player from Jackson signed today.

    The girls are:
    Megan Bolmes, Eastern Washington University
    Kayla Beer, Western Washington University
    Simone Sterling, Xavier University

    The boy is:
    Tye Hastings, Western Washington University

Local soccer signings: Fifteen girls, four boys

This is pretty incredible: At least 15 local girls soccer players signed with college programs. The list includes three girls from Archbishop Murphy, three from King's of Shoreline and three from Jackson.

One of the recruits from Archbishop Murphy is Lindsey Bos, The Herald's 2009 All-Area Player of the Year. She signed with the University of Washington. Hillary Zevenbergen of King's and Everett's Annie Sittauer are also UW-bound.

As for the boys, Marysville-Pilchuck's John Crenshaw and Shorecrest's Michael Harris both signed with the University of Washington men's soccer program. This past spring, Crenshaw was The Herald's All-Area Player of the Year and Harris was the Gatorade Washington Player of the Year.

Look in Thursday's Herald for a sport-by-sport list of local high school recruits.
