Police receive thanks from martial arts students.

Cities earn finance award

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded a Certificate of Achievement to the cities of Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 2008 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by the city, its council and its management.

The cities are among 35 cities in Washington state to receive a certificate. Mountlake Terrace additionally was given a Distinguished Budget Award and is only one of 22 cities statewide to receive both certificates. Only 4.9 percent of cities nationwide (1,747 of 35,932) receive the budget award.

The GFOA is a non profit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals.

Shredding event

Storables is holding free community shred events at their store locations. Mobile shredding units will be in the Lynnwood store’s parking lot 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. March 6, 18205 Alderwood Mall Parkway, and noon to 4 p.m. March 20 at the University Village store. The service is free with a suggested donation of school supplies to support local schools.

Individuals may bring up to two banker boxes of paper to the shredding events. People can watch their documents as they are shred.

Lynnwood firm wins transit award

Cypress Semiconductor has been dubbed Top Employer for Commuters by Community Transit and was honored with a Visionary Award on Feb. 26. The company reduced drive alone vehicles by 10 percent.

Other award winners included Employee Transportation Coordinator of the Year, Sara Poirot, Trade Products & Specialty Manufacturing, Mukilteo; and SMART Commuters of the Year, Carrie Merkley, Bothell, and Marjorie Blaine, Shoreline.

The awards recognize companies and their employees that support Washington state’s Commute Trip Reduction goals and employees reducing vehicle trips to work.

New MLS directors

Northwest Multiple Listing Service has elected its 2010 board of directors with Jeff Foster, designated broker at Advantage GMAC Real Estate in Moses Lake, serving as chairman of the board. Local executive Diedre Haines, Lynnwood-based regional managing broker of Coldwell Bank Bain Associates for Snohomish County, will serve as the board’s treasurer. Last year she served as secretary and is serving a second term on the MLS board.

Local residents take Homeland Security training

Nancy Hamilton, of Edmonds, Vickie Ravenscroft, of Brier, Charles Hall and Lavon Weighall of Mill Creek, and Shahid Rashid and Michelle Gordon, MD, of Lynnwood, are among Evergreen Hospital Medical Center’s employees that have completed Homeland Security training at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Ala. The South County residents were in the 32-hour Healthcare Leadership and Administrative Decision Making Course. Responders are taught an incident command structure to handle all kinds of emergencies and disasters.

• Adopted and foster children and their families are offered discounted rates and scholarships at Carter’s Karate and Fitness Academy in Edmonds. • Lynnwood’s Accent of Appearances hair styling salon collects gently used styling appliances for area women’s shelters. To further these efforts, Jody Lende, owner, is hosting Blow-Dry and Styling Classes encouraging additional donations while offering discounts on new styling tools. Attendees will have a complimentary shampoo and conditioning plus a scalp treatment, and then will blow dry and style their own hair under the watchful eye of a stylist. The Edmonds Kiwanis Club seeks nominations for Edmonds Citizen of the Year. The purpose is to recognize a person, or persons, that has contributed community service and deserves a thank you. LED street lights tested

Mountlake Terrace is testing new energy efficient street lights. Four LED and four induction streetlight retrofits have been installed in the Melody Hill neighborhood along 68th Avenue West between 222nd and 224th because the neighborhood has a new electrical system with a dedicated meter for street lighting.

The LED fixtures use about 100 watts of energy, compared to 190 watts for the fixtures that were replaced. The induction fixtures use about 125 watts of energy.

Ballinger Island closed

Dangerous conditions, created by last summer’s fire on Ballinger Island, have caused the island to be closed indefinitely. The island has dangerous sinkholes, hazardous trees and the ground is unstable.

“No Trespassing on Island” signs are posted along the shores of Lake Ballinger.

The condition of the island will be continually monitored from a public safety standpoint.

Citizens are urged to call 911 if they see anyone accessing the island.

Public service

• Edmonds Sister City Commission is accepting applications from adults interested in co-leading the annual student visit to Japan the last two weeks of July. Chaperones stay with a host family and travel costs are paid by the commission. Application packets are available at www.ci.edmonds.wa.us/sisscity.stm and at the Anderson Center. For more information, call 425-771-0230. Application deadline has been extended to March 8.

• The Mountlake Terrace Police Department is hosting the Police Citizens Academy on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W. The 12-week program begins April 14 and runs through June 30, concluding with a graduation reception for all participants and their families. The deadline to apply for the Police Citizens Academy is 5 p.m. March 12. Space is limited to the first 30 people accepted, so prompt registration is recommended.

Training sessions include information and demonstrations by K-9, SWAT, Narcotics, Records, Evidence Handling, and a ride-along with an Officer. Applicants must be willing to sign a waiver authorizing a background check for acceptance into the program and commit to attending all or most of the classes. Notification of acceptance will be made once the 30 openings have been filled.

March 10 is the date for the next Coffee with the City in Mountlake Terrace. From 8 to 9 a.m., citizens and business owners can have casual conversation with city officials at the Recreation Pavilion.

Snohomish County Councilmember Dave Gossett was re-elected as Treasurer of the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle for 2010. The Trade Development Alliance (TDA) works closely with Puget Sound businesses and government agencies to promote international trade and local jobs.
